Radio What? Jon Risks All for "Payola" on High Seas

By Jon Kitchen (Tim shown "rescuing" object)

"Radiosondes"... This is what Tim Mazol, Austin Kitchen (my son), and I found floating in the water just west of the Chicken Bone on July 3, 2009. In fact, we found two of them about three miles apart.

Just prior to this trip, Dan and his crew were shark fishing in the area of the Ham Bone. Through the fog he was startled to come across a big, ugly, dangerous thing floating ominously in the water that I will let him tell you about. Dan, please add crazy story here......

With Dan's story on floating dangers fresh in my mind, I made a big circle around this unknown white object, which was still attached to a parachute/balloon. Considering that it could be a drug money drop gone bad (!!!!!), we could not help ourselves. As I eased the boat closer, knowing it was going to detonate whatever this thing was, Tim plucked the weightless package from the water for the picture above. Thankfully, Austin's science teacher forced him to learn several vocabulary words during the weather and climate section this past fall. When he recognized the package from the picture in his science book, we dug this July photo from the archives. This little beauty gathers and transmits a bunch of weather info back to it's owner. If we would have known they were reusable, we would have picked up both of them in the name of science. Thanks to the University Of Wisconsin - Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences for the info.
